Krafton to Organize International PUBG: Battlegrounds Tournament in Malaysia

Seoul, Dec 6 (NationPress) The South Korean game developer Krafton revealed on Friday that it will be organizing a global esports tournament for its renowned battle royale game, PUBG: Battlegrounds, which is set to launch next week.
The PUBG Global Championship (PGC) 2024 is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Monday through December 22, as per the announcement from the Korean firm. The PGC serves as the concluding event and the World Championship for this year's competitive season of Battlegrounds.
The initial prize pool is set at $1.5 million, with an extra 25 percent of the revenue generated from the sale of commemorative items during the event to be allocated to the participating teams based on their final rankings, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
A total of 24 teams from across the globe will participate in the tournament, which includes three teams from South Korea and four teams from the American continent.
In the meantime, Krafton's operating income for the third quarter surpassed market expectations due to the ongoing popularity of its blockbuster title, PUBG: Battlegrounds.
The company previously reported an operating profit of 324.4 billion won ($233.9 million) for the July-September period, marking a 71.4 percent increase from the previous year and exceeding market forecasts by over 27 percent.
The average operating profit estimate from analysts was 254.8 billion won, based on a survey conducted by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data branch of Yonhap News Agency.
For the first nine months of the year, Krafton's total operating profit reached 967 billion won, with sales exceeding 2 trillion won, both of which have already surpassed the full-year totals from the previous year.
However, the company's net profit for Q3 saw a decline of 42.6 percent year-on-year, falling to 121.4 billion won due to what it described as non-operational losses from currency fluctuations.
"The enduring popularity of Battlegrounds has significantly contributed to the impressive sales and operating profit figures in the third quarter," a company spokesperson mentioned, referring to the success of their acclaimed battle royale video game.
