Why Does LG Electronics Continue to Face Losses in Q4?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, January 30 (NationPress) - LG Electronics announced on Friday that it continues to face financial losses in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year, primarily attributed to sluggish market demand and one-time expenses related to its restructuring initiatives.
The company's net loss for the October-December period totaled 725.9 billion won (approximately US$505.7 million), an increase from a loss of 713.7 billion won a year prior, as indicated in a regulatory filing.
In the fourth quarter, LG Electronics reported an operating loss of 109 billion won, a significant decline from an operating profit of 135.4 billion won recorded in the same quarter of 2024. However, sales experienced a 4.8% year-on-year increase, reaching 23.85 trillion won, according to Yonhap news agency.
The company pinpointed the lackluster performance to a sluggish recovery in demand for television products and heightened marketing costs.
"In the latter half, the company initiated a voluntary retirement program to enhance workforce efficiency, incurring costs amounting to hundreds of billions of won," the company explained.
For the entire year of 2025, LG Electronics reported a net profit of 1.22 trillion won, more than double that of the previous year.
The annual operating profit stood at 2.47 trillion won, reflecting a 27.5% decline from 3.41 trillion won in 2024. Total annual sales rose by 1.7% to reach 89.2 trillion won.
Despite facing challenging conditions, including tariff impacts, LG Electronics achieved record-breaking annual sales, largely driven by its home appliance sector.
Specifically, the home appliance solutions division generated an operating profit of 1.27 trillion won, attributed to improved production cost management.
Conversely, the media entertainment solutions division reported an operating loss of 750.9 billion won in 2025 due to increasing market competition.
The vehicle solutions division recorded an operating profit of 559 billion won, as the company aims to lead in the software and AI-driven vehicle market.
Looking ahead to 2026, LG Electronics plans to broaden its AI home appliance offerings and develop future growth initiatives, including home robotics.
