LG Energy Solution and General Motors Collaborate on Prismatic Battery Cell Development

Seoul, Dec 3 (NationPress) The South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES) revealed on Tuesday that it has entered into a partnership with General Motors to collaborate on the development of prismatic battery cells.

As part of this agreement, the two companies will work together to advance prismatic battery cell technology along with associated battery materials or chemistries. Once these cells are developed, they are expected to power GM's upcoming electric vehicles (EVs), according to a statement from LGES.

Prismatic battery cells are characterized by their flat, rectangular design within a sturdy enclosure, which enables efficient use of space within battery modules and packs. This design could lead to a reduction in both the cost and weight of EVs, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

The successful development of these cells will be a significant achievement for LGES, positioning it as the first battery manufacturer globally to provide all three types of battery formats — pouch-type, cylindrical, and prismatic cells.

"In collaboration with GM, we are eager to enhance our partnership to explore the optimal chemistry and battery configurations necessary for sustained growth in the EV market," stated Suh Won-joon, executive vice president and head of LGES' advanced automotive battery division.

LGES has enjoyed a robust 14-year partnership in battery technology with the Detroit-based automaker.

Within the framework of their joint venture with GM, LGES currently operates a battery cell manufacturing plant in Ohio and another in Tennessee, with plans for a third facility to commence operations in Michigan next year.

"Our focus lies in refining our battery technology by developing the appropriate battery chemistries and formats to enhance EV performance, improve safety, and lower costs," commented Kurt Kelty, GM's vice president of battery cell and pack. "Extending our partnership with LGES represents a crucial step towards achieving these objectives."

LGES aims to provide efficient and safe power solutions through a broader product portfolio that addresses the diverse requirements in various EV segments, thereby promoting global mass adoption of EVs.
