New Delhi, Oct 12 (NationPress) The leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki and Indian automaker Tata Motors experienced significant growth in car sales this September, enhancing their market share. This period also marked a notable year-on-year surge in electric vehicle sales, according to recent data from the Vahan portal.
Tata Motors achieved an all-time record in monthly retail car sales, reaching 40,594 units in September, primarily fueled by the Nexon, which alone sold over 22,500 units—the highest for any single Tata model. The company’s market share rose to 13.75 percent, up from 11.52 percent in September of the previous year, when it sold 32,586 units in the domestic passenger vehicle market.
Maruti Suzuki further strengthened its position as the market leader in the passenger vehicle segment, which includes cars and SUVs, reporting total retail sales of 1,23,242 units in September. This reflects a market share of 41.17 percent, a slight increase from 40.83 percent in the same month last year, when the company sold 1,15,530 units.
Mahindra & Mahindra secured the third position with retail sales of 37,659 units, propelled by the popularity of its Thar and Scorpio models, achieving a market share of 12.58 percent. This was an increase from 12.67 percent last year, when it recorded 35,863 units sold.
Hyundai Motor India faced a decline in retail sales, tallying 35,812 units for the month, which accounted for 11.96 percent of the market share, down from 13.72 percent last year.
Meanwhile, Hyundai's subsidiary, Kia India, also saw a minor year-on-year decrease, recording a market share of 6.78 percent in September.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor experienced a slight drop in market share to 6.78 percent, with retail sales dipping to 20,303 units in September, down from 20,792 units and a 7.35 percent market share last year.
Overall, the total retail sales of passenger vehicles in September reached 2,99,369 units, marking a 6 percent increase compared to 2,82,945 units from the previous year.
In the two-wheeler segment, Hero MotoCorp saw its market share rise to 25.1 percent in September, up from 22.48 percent last year, with retail sales climbing to 3,23,268 units from 2,71,820 units.
Conversely, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India faced a decline in market share, dropping to 25.05 percent from 27.7 percent last September.
TVS Motor Company increased its market share to 19.11 percent, up from 18.36 percent last year.
Overall, two-wheeler retail sales experienced a 6.5 percent rise, amounting to 12,87,735 units in September compared to 12,08,996 units in the same month last year.
