New Delhi, June 23 (NationPress) Over a month has passed since the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued warnings to ride-hailing services like Ola, Uber India, and Rapido regarding their advance tipping feature, yet this contentious option remains operational on these digital ride-sharing platforms.
This option permits passengers to tip drivers before their journey even starts. Nevertheless, a significant number of users have expressed their discontent, labeling this practice as misleading and unjust.
Numerous users have reported feeling pressured into giving tips without explicit agreement, as highlighted by various media outlets.
Many users believe this situation adds undue pressure and grants drivers excessive influence over ride acceptance, according to these reports.
Moreover, passengers are already facing other challenges, including drivers declining rides, requesting cash payments, or canceling trips after learning the destination.
As of June 22, there has been no new information from the CCPA regarding the status of its investigation.
In the meantime, the tipping option continues to be visible in the fare summary or payment process on applications such as Ola, Uber, Rapido, and even Namma Yatri.
Some users have taken to platforms like X and Reddit to voice their concerns, stating that tips are frequently added automatically and that opting out can be a challenge.
Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi previously addressed the matter on X, affirming that the government is actively considering these complaints.
He indicated that the CCPA is also investigating other platforms, with further notices anticipated if similar practices are identified.
There are claims that Namma Yatri was the first to implement this tipping system in Bengaluru, with subsequent adoption by other companies.
However, it is still uncertain whether Namma Yatri has received any formal notice from the CCPA.
Up to this point, Ola, Uber, Rapido, Namma Yatri, and the CCPA have not provided any official comment on the situation.
Earlier this year, Ola and Uber were also scrutinized for allegedly imposing different fares for iPhone and Android users.
Both companies denied these claims, asserting that their fare structure is consistent across all devices.
