Mumbai, Sep 18 (NationPress) Mark Birrell, the Trade Counsellor for South Asia at the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, expressed his contentment with the newly established India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) on Thursday. He highlighted the excitement surrounding the agreement, which is fostering positive dialogue between enterprises from both countries.
During an interaction with IANS at a CII event, the counsellor remarked that the effects of the Free Trade Agreement can already be felt as the ratification process unfolds, leading towards implementation. He is optimistic about further positive developments in the future.
Birrell commended the collaborative efforts of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British PM Keir Starmer, who jointly announced the trade agreement in the UK back in July.
He stated, "This reflects a truly robust relationship, and I was pleased that the leaders of both nations came together in July to finalize the free trade agreement."
Birrell believes this initiative sends a strong and hopeful message about the ongoing relationship between India and the UK.
When questioned about the recent 50 percent tariff imposed by the US administration on Indian goods, the counsellor opted not to comment directly.
"While I won’t address the India-US tariffs, I am excited about the free trade agreement we have established between the UK and India, which will positively influence our trading relationship," Birrell affirmed.
The FTA not only reduces tariffs and non-tariff barriers but also symbolizes the robust trading ties between the UK and India
In a separate conversation with IANS at the same event, Ming Foong Cheong, Consul General from the Consulate General of Singapore, emphasized India's significant role in the global trade landscape.
"In an increasingly interconnected world, India’s contribution to global trade is paramount. With its vast domestic market, green resources, and digital expertise, India is poised to lead the future of global trade and economic integration," Cheong stated.
