Sensex, Nifty open flat on Oct 13; IT and realty stocks gain up to 2%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's equity benchmark indices opened nearly unchanged on Tuesday, 13 October, with selective buying in IT and realty stocks offsetting broad caution. At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex stood at 71,951.73, up just 27.05 points or 0.04%, while the Nifty50 began trading at 22,364.15, virtually unchanged with a marginal gain of 0.80 points.
Sector Movers: IT and Realty Lead, Pharma Slips
Nifty IT, Nifty Midsmall IT & Telecom, and Nifty Realty each jumped up to 2% in early trade, providing the session's upside momentum. Nifty PSU Bank rose 0.31%, Nifty FMCG added 0.22%, and Nifty Oil & Gas climbed 0.20%.
On the downside, healthcare and pharmaceutical counters faced selling pressure. Nifty Midsmall Healthcare, Nifty 500 Healthcare, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Healthcare all declined up to 0.75%, reflecting cautious sentiment in the defensive segment.
FII Selling and DII Support Define the Undercurrent
Market experts noted there are no fresh triggers to alter the prevailing pattern of sustained foreign institutional investor (FII) selling and domestic institutional investor (DII) buying in the cash segment. With the US 10-year bond yield holding above 5.2%, FIIs are likely to persist with outflows as dollar-denominated assets offer relatively attractive returns, analysts said.
However, net inflows into mutual funds touched a record high of ₹38,307 crore in September, signalling that DIIs retain sufficient firepower to absorb FII selling pressure in the near term. This tug-of-war has been the defining dynamic of Indian equities for several weeks.
Inflation and RBI Rate Outlook in Focus
CPI inflation came in at 5.54%, broadly in line with expectations, while food inflation stood at 7.74%. With Brent crude trading above $100 per barrel, inflationary pressures remain elevated. Experts said a rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in December is now widely anticipated and is expected to be margin-accretive for banks, potentially lending support to the banking sector.
Technical Outlook: 22,435 Is the Key Level to Watch
Technical analysts noted that the recovery construct has 'weakened significantly,' though Tuesday's session begins with hopes of a bounce-back after Monday's decline paused without breaching a recent low. According to these analysts, a sustained move beyond 22,435 on the Nifty is needed to signal meaningful strength. Failure to do so could open the door to a drop toward 22,070–21,900.
Global Cues: AI Sell-Off and Oil Surge Weigh on Asian Markets
Asian equities traded lower as the artificial intelligence rally faced fresh headwinds ahead of a key earnings season. In the US, the Nasdaq ended lower on Monday as oil prices surged following reported attacks on a Saudi airport, while investors positioned ahead of third-quarter bank earnings and critical economic data releases due this week. These global headwinds add a layer of uncertainty to the domestic session.
