SIP inflows hit all-time high of ₹32,490 crore in September: AMFI data
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) inflows into mutual funds climbed to a fresh all-time high of ₹32,490 crore in September 2026, edging past the previous record of ₹32,297 crore set in August, according to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) on Monday, 12 October. The milestone underscores the deepening retail participation in Indian capital markets even as broader economic conditions remain uneven.
Industry-Wide AUM and Equity Inflows
Total mutual fund industry assets under management (AUM) stood at ₹82.64 lakh crore for the month. Equity net inflows surged by 30.6 per cent to ₹38,306.55 crore, a sharp uptick from ₹29,328.62 crore recorded in August. Open-ended equity schemes mobilised ₹74,831.96 crore against redemptions of ₹36,525.41 crore, reflecting robust gross buying activity. Net AUM for equity schemes stood at ₹37.54 lakh crore, while the average AUM for September was ₹38,50,660.61 crore.
Category-Wise Inflow Breakdown
Small cap funds led all categories with net inflows of ₹9,038.57 crore across 3.03 crore folios, mobilising ₹13,025.13 crore gross against redemptions of ₹3,986.56 crore. Mid cap funds attracted ₹7,834.84 crore, followed by flexi cap funds at ₹6,701.80 crore, large and mid cap funds at ₹4,271.22 crore, and multi-cap funds at ₹3,859.55 crore.
Among thematic and sectoral plays, sectoral funds drew ₹1,840.02 crore and thematic funds attracted ₹1,800.07 crore. Notably, contra funds recorded a net outflow of ₹97.88 crore and ELSS tax-saver funds saw a net outflow of ₹662.14 crore.
ETF Flows and Passive Investing Trends
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) recorded a combined net inflow of ₹15,501.40 crore in September. Equity ETFs led with ₹9,959.96 crore, reflecting continued institutional and retail appetite for passive strategies. Gold ETFs attracted ₹4,450.61 crore — a signal of safe-haven demand — while silver ETFs added ₹1,974.32 crore, continuing the momentum in commodity-linked passive products.
Context and What the Numbers Signal
This comes amid a broader trend of rising financialisation of household savings in India. SIP contributions have grown consistently, with July's figure of ₹31,961 crore itself representing a year-on-year jump of 12.28 per cent. The sequential record-setting — August breaching July, and now September breaching August — points to structural rather than seasonal momentum. The dominance of small and mid cap inflows also suggests retail investors are skewing toward higher-risk, higher-return categories, a trend that analysts have flagged as a potential vulnerability in a market correction scenario.
With equity AUM at its current levels and SIP book growing month-on-month, the mutual fund industry's systemic importance to Indian retail wealth is at an all-time high. Whether September's record holds through the October-December quarter will depend partly on market sentiment and any macro turbulence emanating from global rate decisions.
