Seoul, May 5 (NationPress) SK Telecom has halted new subscriber sign-ups for its network as part of its strategy to address a recent significant data breach. The nationwide suspension began on Monday as the company prioritizes the replacement of mobile phone USIM chips after a cyberattack was detected on April 18, which indicated a major leak of customer USIM data, according to reports by Yonhap news agency.
The government mandated SK Telecom last week to stop new subscriber registrations until the company resolves the USIM card shortage stemming from the data breach.
In an effort to mitigate potential damage, the company is offering complimentary USIM replacements to all 25 million of its subscribers, including 2 million users on budget plans. However, the replacement process has faced delays due to limited supplies.
An official from the company stated that approximately 1 million subscribers have successfully replaced their USIMs, while 7.7 million others are awaiting their replacements.
Additionally, SK Telecom has introduced a USIM protection service, which the company claims provides the same level of security against fraudulent financial activities as physically replacing a USIM.
As of 9 am on Monday, 22.18 million customers had registered for this service, as reported by the company.
The official also noted that, to date, there have been no detected incidents of financial loss due to the compromised data.
To assist international travelers, SK Telecom has established temporary booths at Incheon International Airport for on-site USIM replacements. However, those utilizing international roaming services are not eligible for the USIM Protection Service and are encouraged to replace their USIM chips to protect their data while traveling.
“Starting May 5, our 2,600 retail stores will cease new subscriptions and concentrate on replacing universal subscriber identity module (USIM) cards,” stated Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ryu Young-sang.
“This suspension will stay in effect until we implement solutions to the USIM supply issues. Transfers of mobile numbers from other operators will also be paused,” he added.
