Mumbai, Jan 24 (NationPress) In a boost to the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, Tata Electronics has successfully acquired a controlling 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India, a manufacturer of Apple products such as iPhones. This acquisition strengthens Tata Electronics’ role as a key player in India’s electronics manufacturing sector.
This move follows Tata Electronics’ purchase of Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Wistron’s operations in India, located in Narsapura, Karnataka, for $125 million less than a year ago. This aligns with Tata Sons’ Chairman N Chandrasekaran’s ambition for substantial investments in electronics manufacturing.
Tata Electronics and Pegatron are set to integrate their teams, with Pegatron planning to undergo a rebranding as part of this collaboration.
“The acquisition of a majority stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited aligns with Tata Electronics’ strategy to expand our manufacturing capabilities,” remarked Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics.
He expressed optimism for a new era driven by AI, digital technology, and manufacturing efficiencies as they enhance their facilities and scale operations in India.
Pegatron’s facility in India employs approximately 10,000 individuals and is responsible for the production of iPhone 13 and 14 models.
Earlier this month, Tata Electronics obtained clearance from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to advance with the acquisition, which is a crucial part of Tata Electronics’ strategy to strengthen its foothold in Apple’s iPhone manufacturing ecosystem in the nation.
As part of the agreement, Pegatron India will be rebranded to mirror its new ownership structure and strategic direction while continuing to deliver top-notch electronics manufacturing services.
Founded in 2020 as a greenfield project of the Tata Group, Tata Electronics employs over 50,000 people and boasts significant operations across Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
The iPhone contract manufacturers active in India now encompass Foxconn, Tata, and Pegatron.
Thanks to the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and the rising trend of premiumization, Apple achieved Rs 1 lakh crore in iPhone exports from India in the calendar year 2024.
According to preliminary industry estimates, Apple exported over $12 billion worth of iPhones last year, marking a growth of more than 40% from 2023.
Apple's domestic production has surged nearly 46% compared to the previous year, according to estimates.
The Apple ecosystem has also generated 175,000 new direct jobs over four years, with over 72% of these being women.
