Seoul, March 17 (NationPress) The US government has officially acknowledged that the renowned electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, Tesla, was indeed the purchaser in a battery supply agreement finalized by LG Energy Solution in July, according to industry insiders.

The US Department of the Interior revealed the outcomes of the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum conducted in Tokyo over the weekend, which highlighted the Tesla-LG Energy Solution agreement, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

According to the U.S. department's website, "Tesla and LG Energy Solution are enhancing their collaboration through a supply agreement aimed at establishing a $4.3 billion lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic battery cell manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, with production slated to commence in 2027."

"These cells, manufactured in the United States, will power Tesla's Megapack 3 energy storage systems produced in Houston, thereby fostering a strong domestic battery supply chain," it added.

In July, LG Energy Solution announced that it had entered into a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supply contract with an undisclosed overseas client.

The South Korean battery manufacturer confirmed that it would provide LFP batteries to the unnamed customer for a duration of three years, spanning from August 1, 2027, to July 31, 2030.

Industry analysts had speculated that Tesla was the recipient, but LG Energy Solution opted not to disclose specifics, citing confidentiality concerns.

In July, LG Energy Solution Ltd, a leading battery producer in South Korea, indicated that it had signed a 5.9 trillion-won (approximately $4.26 billion) lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery supply contract with a foreign client.

In a regulatory filing, LG Energy Solution stated that it would supply LFP batteries to the unnamed customer for three years, from August 1, 2027, to July 31, 2030.

The contract's value represents about 23.2% of the company's total annual sales of 25.6 trillion won recorded last year, as per the filing.

The duration and value of the contract may be adjusted based on further negotiations with the client, it noted.

In the United States, LG Energy Solution operates three battery cell facilities located in Ohio, Tennessee, and Michigan. The Michigan facility currently manufactures LFP batteries for energy storage systems (ESSs).
