How is Underground Mining at Gondkhari Boosting Sustainability?

Ahmedabad, July 22 (NationPress) The development of the Gondkhari Underground Coal Block near Nagpur is set to cause minimal disturbance to local villages and surrounding forests. The Ministry of Coal has awarded this block to Adani Power Limited through a competitive bidding process, with an aim to produce two million tonnes of coal annually using advanced underground technology.

This initiative is part of the Coal Ministry's strategy to enhance coal production in the country while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The Gondkhari project stands out as a model for eco-friendly resource extraction, ensuring that surface disruption is kept to a minimum. Out of the total 862.00 hectares, including 87.351 hectares of revenue forest land, no mining operations or infrastructure development will take place on the forested areas.

Consequently, this underground mining project will effectively prevent tree felling and forest degradation, addressing key concerns raised by stakeholders. Infrastructure and mine entries will be established on privately acquired land, allowing the preservation of vital forest patches.

This underground mining approach not only protects biodiversity but also adheres to the principles of ecological conservation. The Forest Diversion Proposal highlights the project's dedication to regulatory compliance, particularly with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

In addition to its environmental focus, the Gondkhari Underground Mining project promises significant socio-economic advantages. It is a long-anticipated project that does not require any resettlement and is expected to create both direct and indirect employment opportunities for over 2500 people in the Vidarbha region.

Adani Power has outlined a comprehensive CSR plan aimed at local communities, addressing crucial areas such as education, health, livelihood, and rural infrastructure. Local youth will benefit from skill development programs initiated under the company's Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, designed to enhance employability and promote inclusive growth. Furthermore, the project will contribute to state revenue through royalties, taxes, and duties.
