Kolkata, July 23 (NationPress) The iconic Kolkata club East Bengal FC is set to face the newcomers South United FC in the inaugural match of the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at Kolkata's Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Oscar Bruzon, the Red & Gold Brigade is eager to kick off their season with a strong performance.
Following a mixed season in 2024-25, EEB has made significant upgrades to their roster during the ongoing summer transfer window, including notable Indian signings like Bipin Singh, Edmund Lalrindika, Martand Raina, and Ramsanga, as well as new international players such as Mohammed Rashid, Miguel Figueira, and Kevin Sibille.
The team, a 16-time champion of the Durand Cup, finds itself in Group A alongside South United FC, Namdhari FC, and Indian Air Force FT.
On the other hand, South United FC is gearing up for its debut in this historic tournament. Founded in 2012, this Bengaluru-based club currently competes in the BFDA Super Division. The upcoming match will be the first encounter between these two teams.
During a training session ahead of the match, Head Coach Oscar Bruzon remarked, "This marks the start of the season. We are focusing on improving the fitness levels of all players. Coach Bino has been training with the Indian players for some weeks now. The Durand Cup is a challenging tournament, as only one team from each group can advance to the knockout stage. South United has been preparing extensively, so they will be a formidable opponent. We must utilize our resources effectively and uphold East Bengal's legacy in this prestigious competition."
The match will be aired live on the Sony Sports Network and the Sony LIV app.
