New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) Meta is making significant moves to monetize WhatsApp by testing innovative advertising features. In the latest Android beta update (version 2.25.21.11), the messaging service has rolled out two new functionalities – Status Ads and Promoted Channels.
These features are currently available to a select group of beta users on Android, as reported by WABetaInfo.
Status Ads resemble the advertisements seen in Instagram Stories. Business accounts now have the ability to share sponsored content that appears in users' Status feeds.
These ads will be interspersed among updates from friends and family but will carry a distinct 'sponsored' label, allowing users to easily differentiate them from personal updates.
WhatsApp is also empowering users with more control over their viewing experience. If a user prefers not to see ads from a specific advertiser, they can block that advertiser, ensuring those ads do not reappear.
The second feature, Promoted Channels, aims to enhance the visibility of public channels within WhatsApp’s channel directory.
Like Status Ads, these promoted channels will be identified as 'sponsored'. When a business or creator invests in promoting their channel, it will be prioritized in search results, making it easier for users to discover and follow them.
These enhancements could prove beneficial for brands, creators, and organizations seeking rapid audience growth.
This also indicates WhatsApp's serious foray into the advertising and creator monetization space—an approach already familiar on platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
Meta has guaranteed that these ads will not compromise users’ privacy. The company states that all promotional content will be displayed solely in public spaces like Status and Channels, leaving private chats ad-free.
In a prior beta update (2.25.19.15), WhatsApp began testing a feature enabling users to download comprehensive ad activity reports.
These reports provide insights into which ads were shown, who the advertisers were, and the viewing times of those ads, offering greater transparency compared to conventional ad platforms.
