New Delhi, May 1 (NationPress) The renowned software company Zoho has decided to pause its ambitious $700 million semiconductor chip manufacturing venture. Co-founder Sridhar Vembu stated on Thursday that the organization lacks sufficient confidence in the existing technological direction to move forward.
Vembu elaborated that the chip fabrication industry is inherently capital-intensive, necessitating robust government support.
“Regarding our semiconductor fabrication investment, given the capital-intensive nature of this business, it is crucial to have government backing. We wanted to ensure we are fully confident in the technology path before utilizing taxpayer funds,” Vembu expressed on the X social media platform.
He further mentioned the absence of that confidence in the technology, leading the board to the decision to temporarily halt the project “until we discover a more reliable tech solution.”
“We aimed to be absolutely certain of the technology path prior to using taxpayer money. Lacking that confidence, our board chose to pause this initiative for now,” Vembu explained, detailing the rationale behind the company's decision to suspend the plan.
The Tamil Nadu-based software entity had applied for incentives under the central government’s Rs 76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in June of the previous year.
Additionally, Zoho established a new entity named Silectric Semiconductor Manufacturing to spearhead the fabrication unit initiative.
Prior to its ISM application, Zoho had also revealed plans to create a semiconductor design project in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, where the company is headquartered.
In January of this year, Vembu transitioned from CEO to assume the role of chief scientist.
Zoho provides software and related services via subscription to various businesses across multiple countries.
Founded in 1996 by Vembu, the company started as a software development house for network equipment providers called AdventNet, later rebranded to Zoho Corporation in 2009, focusing on SaaS solutions for customer relationship management.
Vembu relocated to Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu in 2019.
