“The flag hoisting ceremony at IFFM transcends mere tradition; it is a profoundly emotional and unifying experience. Witnessing the Tiranga unfurl on foreign soil, amidst artists, filmmakers, and members of both the Indian and Australian communities, evokes immense pride,” remarked festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange.
Lange further emphasized, “Having Aamir Khan, whose vision and cinema have left an indelible mark on generations of film enthusiasts worldwide, lead this moment is indeed a unique honor.”

Supported by the Government of Victoria, IFFM is the largest Indian film festival held outside of India. With a history of presenting powerful and diverse Indian narratives, the festival remains a beacon of inclusivity and cinematic brilliance.
In other updates, the restored version of filmmaker Prem Kapoor’s 1971 film ‘Badnaam Basti’, hailed as India’s first gay film, will be featured during IFFM’s pride night celebration.
This year, IFFM plans to showcase nearly 75 films that explore themes of inclusivity related to gender, race, sexuality, disability, and women’s representation. A highlight of the festival includes the LGBTQ+ Pride Night on August 22, dedicated to honoring queer cinema and South Asian queer identity in Australia.
The festival will also open with acclaimed actress Tillotama Shome’s Bengali film “Baksho Bondi – Shadowbox”. Co-directed by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi in their directorial debut, the film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival 2025. Jointly produced by Tillotama and Jim Sarbh, it stars Tillotama as Maya, set in a dusty Kolkata suburb, illustrating a powerful narrative of love, resilience, and the quiet strength of a working woman navigating her daily life.
