In a candid conversation, the actor revealed that the transition was anything but smooth — and that low expectations from the audience turned out to be his biggest asset.

The Real Challenge on Set

For Abhishek, the hardest part of stepping into the show was not the dramatic weight of the character, but something far more practical. 'One of the toughest parts for me wasn't the regular dialogues, they came quite easily. The real challenge was remembering all the dish names, especially the English ones,' he said.

He added that he tackled the problem with disciplined preparation. 'I would start studying them from the morning itself so that when the scene came up, I could recall them effortlessly and deliver them in a smooth flow. I always made sure I was prepared for those moments,' he said. Set against the backdrop of a heritage South Indian restaurant, the show demanded an authentic culinary vocabulary — and Abhishek was determined to deliver it.

Why Low Expectations Worked in His Favour

Abhishek acknowledged that audience perception, often a pressure point for actors, worked differently in his case. 'I'm glad people didn't expect this from me, which is why they're really surprised. When expectations are very high, people often have a fixed idea of what you should do,' he noted.

'But in my case, people knew me as someone who makes them laugh, so when they saw me handling a serious character, they were genuinely amazed. For me, that became a huge advantage,' he said. The observation cuts to a broader truth about typecasting in Indian television — where an actor's established image can become both a shield and a ceiling.

About the Show and His Character

In 'Ishq Dum Aur Idli Rasam', Abhishek plays Arjun Thakur, a global chef-investor who enters the kitchen of a storied South Indian restaurant with ambitions of reviving it commercially. He is pitted against Meera Nair, the restaurant's head chef, who holds on to her late father's belief that food is service, not spectacle. The tension between tradition and ambition drives the narrative.
