Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently returned to the iconic railway station where the legendary train-platform scene from Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's 1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) was filmed, describing the experience as deeply nostalgic and emotionally resonant. Standing at the same spot three decades later, Kher shared that the moment felt surreal, as though time itself had momentarily paused.

The iconic DDLJ scene revisited

Kher, who played Dharamvir Malhotra (Raj's father) in Aditya Chopra's directorial debut, recalled the unforgettable sequence where Simran (Kajol) runs from her father's grasp and boards a moving train to join Raj (Shah Rukh Khan). "The scene is from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Simran runs. Amrish ji says, Ja Simran ja, jee le apni zindagi. And Simran runs from here, and the train is there," Kher narrated in a video shared from the location. He also recalled the fight sequence between his character and Bittu (Archana's husband) that unfolded at the same spot.

Nostalgia and memories flood back

Kher reflected on how the physical space had transformed since the original shoot in 1989, noting that the railway infrastructure had evolved significantly. Yet, despite these changes, the emotional weight of the location remained intact. "Wow, it's like going to Sicily for a sequence of Godfather," he remarked, drawing a parallel to revisiting legendary film locations. The actor expressed gratitude to the late Yash Chopra and his son Aditya Chopra for including him in the project that would become a cornerstone of Indian cinema.

A call for heritage preservation

Kher made a passionate appeal to the Government of Maharashtra to develop the railway station as a tourism destination and cultural heritage site. "Meri dil se ichchha hai ki Government of Maharashtra is jagah ko ek tourism spot ke roop mein develop kare," he wrote, emphasizing that film locations worldwide have become integral to collective memory and emotional connection. He advocated for preserving India's cinematic legacy with the same reverence afforded to such landmarks globally.

Released in 1995, DDLJ tells the story of Raj and Simran, two non-resident Indians who fall in love during a European vacation. The film's central conflict revolves around Simran's father's prior commitment to marry her to a family friend's son, setting up the dramatic climax at the railway station.
