Rahman has launched Tamil Idol, the first-ever Tamil-language edition of the globally recognised singing competition format, with statewide auditions opening across Tamil Nadu from 18 August. The talent hunt, unveiled by Sony Vizha, invites aspiring singers to register through the Sony LIV app and compete for a platform under one of India's most celebrated musical minds.

Tamil Idol is designed to surface undiscovered singing talent from across Tamil Nadu, giving regional voices a national stage for the first time under this iconic format. Auditions are open from 18 August, and singers can register directly on the Sony LIV app by navigating to the Tamil Idol Audition section and completing their personal details.

Crucially, in-person attendance is not mandatory. Participants from any corner of the state — or beyond — can audition remotely through the app, broadening the reach of the talent search significantly.

The Tamil Idol launch comes as A.R. Rahman continues to expand his creative footprint internationally. He recently unveiled the soundtrack for Baab, an Arabic psychological fantasy-thriller directed by Nayla Al Khaja — marking his first-ever collaboration on an Arabic-language film. The original soundtrack, featuring 10 compositions, was released across major streaming platforms through his music label KM Musiq and distributed worldwide by Divo.

Rahman has said he was drawn to Baab because of its emotional complexity and the distinctive world crafted by director Al Khaja — underscoring a pattern of the composer gravitating toward unconventional, boundary-crossing projects.

Tamil Nadu has long been a powerhouse of Carnatic tradition and film music, yet a dedicated Tamil edition of a global singing competition format has not existed until now.
