Tamil Nadu is set to overhaul its sports ecosystem, with Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna chairing a high-level review meeting at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, 19 May, to chart a comprehensive roadmap for athlete welfare, infrastructure upgrades, and merit-based talent identification across all districts in the state.

Key Developments from the Review Meeting

The meeting, attended by senior Sports Department officials, covered a wide range of initiatives planned for 2026-27. Discussions centred on new infrastructure projects, the implementation of a three per cent reservation for sports persons in government jobs, enhanced incentives for medal winners at national and international events, upgrades to sports hostels, and expanded financial assistance schemes for athletes.

Special focus was placed on identifying talented school students from economically weaker backgrounds, ensuring that financial constraints do not limit sporting potential.

A New Talent Research Wing on Merit Alone

'As part of this effort, the government is setting up a talent research wing to identify promising athletes purely on merit, without recommendations or external influence,' Minister Aadhav Arjuna said after the meeting.

This marks a significant structural shift in how Tamil Nadu scouts sporting talent — moving away from recommendation-driven selection toward a data-backed, merit-first model. The wing is expected to operate in coordination with the Sports Department across all districts.

What the Government Said on Athlete Support

'Financial constraints should not become a barrier for sports persons to achieve excellence, and the government is working on mechanisms to support athletes more effectively,' Arjuna said. The meeting also stressed ensuring that athletes receive essential equipment — including shoes and training gear — without delay.

In a notable administrative move, the government announced steps to integrate sports associations through an online platform, improving coordination between associations, the Sports Department, and athletes directly.

Field Inspections and Infrastructure Review

Following directions from Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, Minister Arjuna said he would undertake field inspections across all districts to assess sports infrastructure and identify facilities requiring improvement. Earlier in the day, the Minister interacted with athletes attending selection trials at the stadium and inspected specialised facilities, including the para-athletes' fitness centre, table tennis arena, weightlifting unit, and shooting ranges.

Senior officials including Youth Welfare and Sports Development Secretary S. J. R. Chauhan and Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority Member Secretary J. Meganath Reddy were present at the meeting.
