Why Does Ashoke Pandit Oppose India Playing Pakistan in the T20 World Cup?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 10 (NationPress) IFTDA President Ashoke Pandit has voiced his strong opposition to India competing against Pakistan in the T-20 World Cup.
On Monday, Pakistan revealed its intention to face India on February 15 in Colombo during the Group A match of the Men's T20 World Cup 2026. This announcement followed the approval from the Government of Pakistan.
In response to this news, Ashoke Pandit conveyed to IANS in an exclusive interview that he stands firmly against any sporting engagements with Pakistan, a nation often associated with terrorism.
The filmmaker emphasized that allowing India to play against Pakistan would disrespect the sentiments of the nation and the security forces who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the country.
During his conversation with IANS, Ashoke Pandit remarked, "I am entirely opposed to this. India should not engage in sports with Pakistan. A nation that harbors terrorism and fosters unrest is not a suitable opponent for us. Competing with them undermines the emotions of our people and the sacrifices made by our military and their families for our safety."
He reiterated his stance by stating, "Thus, I personally reject any form of sports or commercial relations with Pakistan."
Interestingly, just days prior, Pakistan had announced it would not be competing against India. However, they later reversed this decision, with a tweet from the official Pakistan government account stating, "The Honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif, has been formally briefed by the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mr. Mohsin Naqvi, regarding the outcomes of high-level deliberations held between the PCB, representatives of the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Considering the results from multilateral discussions and requests from friendly nations, the government of Pakistan instructs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to participate on February 15 in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup."
