Why is Harbhajan Singh Criticizing Pakistan's T20 WC Boycott?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 2 (NationPress) Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh criticized Pakistan's choice to participate selectively in the upcoming Men's T20 World Cup 2026, specifically their decision to boycott the Group A match against India. He labeled it an unnecessary ploy aimed at misleading the public.
The Pakistan government has instructed the Pakistan Cricket Board to abstain from facing India in the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup, offering conditional approval for the team to compete. This move is in protest against the ICC’s denial to relocate Bangladesh's World Cup matches from India, which Pakistan had fervently supported.
“Begani Shadi mei abdullah deewana… The Pakistan government has declared that their team will partake in the T20 World Cup but will not engage with India. This reasoning is completely illogical. This same government and PCB will eventually claim that the issue was primarily Bangladesh's, and that the ICC imposed the ban while they were willing to negotiate. This is merely a show created to mislead the public. They wish to portray solidarity with Bangladesh,” Harbhajan stated on his YouTube channel.
The International Cricket Council previously confirmed that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will proceed as planned, with Bangladesh’s matches to be held in India after the Bangladesh Cricket Board requested their matches be moved to Sri Lanka.
Subsequently, the ICC declared that Scotland will take Bangladesh's place in the T20 World Cup 2026 after the BCB opted out of participating as per the announced match schedule.
“While you may claim to support Bangladesh, have you considered the sentiments of your own citizens who desire to witness an India-Pakistan match?”
During the voting on Bangladesh’s request, it faced rejection by a significant margin of 14-2. Although the ICC chairman is from India, the other 14 members who voted against the request included representatives from Australia, England, South Africa, and other nations, all supporting the decision to exclude Bangladesh. So why escalate tensions over this issue, and what do you gain from it?” Harbhajan asked.
He further remarked, “You’ve announced your participation in the World Cup but refuse to play against India—stand firm on that decision. Let’s see if you truly have the fortitude to uphold it or if this was merely a shot in the dark. In my view, this decision resembles shooting an arrow into the air to see how far it travels.”
Last year, India and Pakistan competed in the Asia Cup at a neutral venue. Harbhajan also criticized Pakistan's double standards in international cricket, highlighting that financial interests often took precedence over political disputes.
“If you choose not to come, that’s fine. India also refrains from visiting your country — that’s fair. However, this match was to occur at a neutral venue. Previously, during the Asia Cup, despite issues, the match proceeded due to financial benefits, and you were unwilling to forfeit that revenue. It’s conceivable that sanctions could be imposed on you, and you may not get the chance to host any ICC tournaments in the future,” he concluded.
