Are ICC and PCB Engaging in 'Back-Channel Talks' Following Pakistan's T20 WC Boycott Against India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) The decision by Pakistan to boycott their T20 World Cup group match against India has seemingly initiated 'back-channel discussions' between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), raising concerns over the potential financial repercussions.
On Sunday, the Pakistan government declared that its national cricket team would refrain from playing the T20 World Cup group-stage match against India, scheduled for February 15 at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium. This action could potentially lead to losses exceeding $250 million for the global cricketing community.
According to a report from The Dawn, several other cricket boards have expressed their support for the ICC’s efforts to negotiate with the PCB.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether the PCB will face any sanctions for this decision, with the ICC urging the board to contemplate the significant and long-term effects if the boycott proceeds.
In reaction to Pakistan’s announcement, the ICC released a strong statement on Sunday, encouraging the PCB to pursue a mutually agreeable solution and cautioning that selective participation undermines the essence of global competition.
“While the ICC awaits formal communication from the PCB, this position of selective participation is challenging to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms as per the event schedule,” the ICC stated.
“The ICC hopes that the PCB will consider the considerable and long-term ramifications for cricket in its own nation, as this is likely to affect the global cricket ecosystem, of which it is a member and beneficiary,” it added.
Pakistan is placed in Group A along with India, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA. All of Pakistan's matches are set to take place in Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament alongside India.
