Did the ICC Reject PCB's Demands Amidst Pakistan's Standoff with India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly dismissed three significant requests from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during the ongoing talks between the two organizations, following Pakistan's decision not to participate in their T20 World Cup 2026 match against India scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.
As per media reports, the PCB made several appeals to the ICC in an attempt to persuade them to reconsider their stance on the boycott against India.
One of Pakistan's requests included a bilateral series with India, which the ICC turned down, asserting that it lies beyond their jurisdiction, even within the context of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
The PCB also suggested a tri-series involving India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, but the ICC firmly rejected this proposal.
In a show of solidarity, the PCB backed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), whose representatives were also present at the meeting.
They requested that India must visit Bangladesh later this year for a series that was postponed last year. However, the ICC reiterated that they cannot intervene in matters concerning bilateral series.
Additionally, the PCB's call for Bangladesh to be awarded a compensatory ICC event, following last year's Women’s T20 World Cup relocation from Bangladesh to Dubai, was taken into consideration. There is a chance that Bangladesh could be granted the hosting rights for the next Under-19 World Cup.
Reports indicate that one of Pakistan’s prominent demands is ensuring that Bangladesh continues to receive its share of ICC revenue. Nevertheless, the ICC has already resolved not to impose penalties on Bangladesh independently.
The governing body has provided the PCB with a 24-hour deadline to make a decisive choice. The ultimate decision now rests with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whom the PCB chairman is scheduled to meet on Monday evening. A final decision is anticipated shortly.
In the meantime, both Pakistan and India commenced their campaigns with victories. Salman Agha’s team narrowly triumphed over the Netherlands, while India secured a 29-run victory against the USA.
