Subodh Bhave on playing Neem Karoli Baba: 'The saint chooses the actor'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor Subodh Bhave has spoken at length about the emotional and spiritual weight of portraying Neem Karoli Baba in the upcoming biopic 'Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj', saying he believes the revered saint himself guided his casting in the film.
A Role Rooted in Devotion
Bhave acknowledged that stepping into the shoes of any saint is among the most demanding challenges an actor can face. He noted that audiences carry a profound emotional and spiritual bond with such figures, making authenticity not just a craft requirement but a moral one.
'Playing any saint is extremely difficult because people look at them with immense faith and devotion. They hold a sacred place in their hearts. Portraying such a Mahatma is never easy unless you receive his blessings. I truly feel that I could perform this role only because Maharaj Ji blessed me,' Bhave said.
How the Role Found Him
Bhave revealed that when director Sharad Singh Thakur first approached him for the project, he had limited familiarity with Neem Karoli Baba's life and legacy. He had heard the saint's name from industry friends who frequented Kainchi Dham, but had never personally visited the ashram or Vrindavan.
'Once Sharad ji narrated his life story to me, I felt deeply connected. At one point, I even wondered how Sharad ji reached out to me because neither he nor his team knew me personally. That is when I realised that no actor chooses the role of a saint. The saint himself chooses the actor,' Bhave said. He added that everything he absorbed from the director and from Baba's devotees 'stayed in my heart,' and that when the camera rolled, 'those emotions naturally reflected on screen.'
Capturing Simplicity on Screen
Asked how he internalised Neem Karoli Baba's trademark simplicity and calm, Bhave was candid about the limits of craft. He maintained that no actor is fully capable of recreating the spiritual presence of a saint through technique alone.
'That becomes possible only through blessings. I believe Maharaj Ji's grace was with me, and because of that, portraying him did not feel difficult,' he said.

The film is among a growing wave of Indian biopics centred on spiritual and religious figures, a genre that has found consistent audience traction in recent years.
