Were the Grammys organizers caught off guard by Justin Bieber's performance attire?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Feb 5 (NationPress) Singer-songwriter Justin Bieber electrified the audience at this year's Grammy Awards with a strikingly bold fashion choice. Unbeknownst to the event's organizers, he opted to perform in just his undergarments.
The 31-year-old artist took the stage at the glamorous ceremony dressed in nothing but a pair of satin boxer shorts from his own fashion line and a pair of socks, according to Female First UK.
This unexpected wardrobe decision caught the event's planners off guard, as Bieber had not informed anyone of his intentions.
During a discussion on the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, Grammy Awards executive producer Ben Winston remarked, "I don’t think he decided what the outfit would be until he walked on stage."
He further explained, "He's not even really going, 'This is what I'm going to do.' When we reached out to him about his creative input, he simply stated, 'I'm just going to get on stage and sing.'"
According to Female First UK, Winston disclosed that the Baby hitmaker required minimal rehearsal time for his performance, dedicating only 15 minutes out of the 90 minutes allocated for practice.
Winston shared, "It was brilliant. We were seven minutes into his hour-and-a-half rehearsal, and he asked: 'How’d it look to you? You happy with it?' I was like, 'Oh, my God. It looked beautiful. I loved it.' He responded, 'Okay, fantastic. See you Sunday.'"
However, Winston did request that Bieber perform the song again so camera operators could set up their shots properly.
He remarked on Bieber's performance, "It was what he wanted to do. It was all him. It was a career-defining moment for him. It was so different from what we've witnessed over the years."
The awards show also featured a notable mistake by singer Cher, who mistakenly declared Luther Vandross as the winner of Record of the Year, despite the fact that Vandross had passed away in 2005.
The Believe hitmaker quickly corrected herself and awarded the honor to the actual winner, Kendrick Lamar, who took home the Record of the Year for his collaboration with SZA on the song Luther.
During his podcast appearance, Winston affirmed that Cher was adequately briefed before taking the stage, but he would not want to erase the moment from Grammy history if given the chance.
He stated, "I promise you, we had briefed her, and I swear, what she had to do was in the prompter."
"If I could go back in time, I’d want that to happen again."
Winston also insisted that Cher was "happy" with her presenting, despite the initial blunder. He concluded, "She’s happy with it. She had a great time. You want a bit of anarchy."
