Hyderabad, Feb 12 (NationPress) Telugu superstar K. Chiranjeevi has ignited controversy with his statements regarding his hope for a grandson to preserve his family's legacy.
The well-known actor is encountering backlash on social media, with many perceiving his comments as sexist.
The megastar, as he is often referred to, made these remarks during a pre-release event for the Telugu film ‘Brahma Anandam’. He articulated his wish for a grandson to uphold his legacy.
Critics have accused him of suggesting that only a male heir can ensure the continuation of his family’s legacy.
Chiranjeevi's comment about feeling like a warden of a ladies’ hostel when surrounded by his granddaughters also drew significant criticism from social media users.
Additionally, he expressed concern that his son Ram Charan might have another daughter.
“When I’m at home, it doesn’t feel like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels more like I’m a warden of a ladies’ hostel,” he said in jest.
“I keep hoping and telling (Ram) Charan to have a boy this time so our legacy can continue, but his daughter is his pride and joy... I worry he might have another girl. They are lovely kids,” he added.
Ram Charan’s daughter was born on June 20, 2023, and Chiranjeevi affectionately referred to her as the ‘Little Mega Princess’.
In response to Chiranjeevi’s comments, netizens labeled his views as outdated, reminding him that daughters are equally capable of preserving a family’s name and achievements.
He has several granddaughters from his two daughters — Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela.
Meanwhile, YSR Congress Party spokesperson Syamala expressed astonishment at Chiranjeevi’s statements. “Does only a son carry forward the legacy, not a daughter?” she questioned.
The YSRCP leader urged those who believe that only sons can be successors to reconsider their mindset, as women have accomplished remarkable feats across various fields. “Chiranjeevi’s daughter-in-law Upasana is a dynamic individual. Her family members have made significant achievements,” she noted.
