Director Jeethu Joseph on Wednesday, 20 May shared a deeply personal reflection on George Kutty, the iconic character brought to life by Mohanlal across the Drishyam franchise, writing that after 13 years with the character, he could no longer tell whether he had written George Kutty's story — or whether George Kutty had written his. The post came on the eve of the theatrical release of Drishyam 3, the third instalment in one of Malayalam cinema's most celebrated franchises.

Joseph's Message to Fans

Taking to Instagram on the eve of the film's release, Joseph wrote: '13 years with Georgekutty. I'm not sure if I wrote his story, or if he wrote mine. In Cinemas Worldwide From Tomorrow. #Drishyam3' The post captured the emotional weight of a creative journey that has spanned over a decade and reshaped Malayalam cinema's relationship with the thriller genre.

What the Teaser Reveals

A teaser released by the makers had already stoked anticipation among fans. It opens with recaps of the first two films — the first narrated from George Kutty's own perspective, the second from the viewpoint of his adversaries, the police. In the teaser, George Kutty's voice is heard saying: 'I am just an ordinary man. My world is small and it comprises just my wife and my children. An unwanted guest invaded our privacy — a guest who had the power to destroy my family. We sent him back forever to ensure he would never return to ruin our lives.'

A policeman's voice then counters: 'It's like a case that is closed but will never close. Actually, it was not us who were watching him. He was the one watching us.' The teaser ends with George Kutty in a church, confessing to God: 'This battle of mine began the day I was born... I did not realise how many people I had hurt. Now, I am scared, sir. I don't know who else is out there watching!'

A Rattled Protagonist — New Stakes for Part 3

In the first two instalments, George Kutty's defining quality was composure under pressure — his ability to outthink the police at every turn. Drishyam 3 appears to upend that dynamic. The teaser presents a visibly scared George Kutty, raising the central dramatic question: can a shaken man still summon the presence of mind that made him legendary? The film picks up four-and-a-half years after the events of the second part, according to director Joseph.

The Road to Release

The film's journey to cinemas was not without hurdles. Originally scheduled for 2 April, the release was postponed due to the tense situation in the Gulf region. It is now set to release on 21 May. Mohanlal completed his portions in December last year, and a video of the actor cutting a cake with the unit to mark the occasion reportedly went viral. Notably, he had begun work on the film just as he received Indian cinema's highest honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The film was formally launched with a puja ceremony at a law college near Kochi in September last year, with the unit shooting across locations including Thodupuzha, Vagamon, and Ernakulam.

The Franchise's Legacy

Producer Antony Perumbavoor, a long-time collaborator of Mohanlal and key force behind the series, said the decision to proceed with a third instalment came after extensive deliberations. 'The phenomenal response to the first two parts convinced us that Georgekutty's journey had more to tell. Only after detailed talks with Jeethu did we finalise this new version,' he stated. The original Drishyam, released in 2013, set new benchmarks for Malayalam thrillers. Its sequel, released in 2021, drew record-breaking viewership in theatres and on streaming platforms. With the third part arriving amid massive expectations, the franchise shows no signs of losing its hold on audiences.
