Mumbai, Aug 31 (NationPress) Rajkummar Rao delivered an unforgettable portrayal of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi in the acclaimed 2012 film "Shahid". Director Hansal Mehta recently disclosed how he persuaded his producers to cast Rajkummar by showcasing a poster.
On the occasion of his 41st birthday, Hansal shared the poster on his official Instagram, noting that many believed the film's title would not attract commercial success, leading to several initial team members withdrawing from the project.
"This was a poster we created to convince our producer @sunil_s_bohra that this talented FTII graduate was the right choice for the role of Shahid Azmi. The title faced skepticism due to its Muslim association, which some thought would limit its commercial viability. Despite this, a dedicated few, including Rajkummar Rao, remained committed to the project," Hansal expressed.
Praising Rajkummar's dedication, the director remarked: "He poured his immense talent and over 11 months of his life into this role. Not only did I find a remarkable collaborator in him, but he also became like family. Today, on his birthday, I reflect on where it all started with this poster. An actor emerged, a bond was formed, and we were truly blessed. Happy birthday, dear @rajkummar_rao!"
Written by Sameer Gautam Singh, "Shahid" was co-produced by Anurag Kashyap and Sunil Bohra alongside Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur under the UTV Spotboy banner.
Based on the real-life story of lawyer and human rights advocate Shahid Azmi, who was tragically assassinated in 2010, the film also features Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Prabhleen Sandhu, and Baljinder Kaur in significant roles, along with others.
Premiering on October 18, 2013, "Shahid" garnered widespread acclaim. Rajkummar earned the title of 'Best Actor' during the 61st National Film Awards, while Hansal was awarded 'Best Director'.
