Veteran Bollywood actress Hema Malini has revealed that she was initially upset when she was first billed as the 'Dream Girl' — not because of the iconic title itself, but because her own name was entirely absent from the publicity campaign for her debut film. The candid disclosure came during a special episode of the singing reality show Indian Idol, where the legendary star shared rarely heard anecdotes from her early career.

How the 'Dream Girl' Title Was Born

Hema Malini recalled that the nickname predates her 1977 film 'Dream Girl' by several years, tracing back to the release of her debut film 'Sapno Ka Saudagar'. Her producer had taken her, her mother, and her brother on a tour of Mumbai to preview the film's publicity campaign. What she found on the hoardings surprised her.

'Everyone believes that I got the name Dream Girl because of this film, which is absolutely not true,' she said on the show. The hoardings simply read 'Dream Girl Coming', with no mention of her name anywhere. 'My name wasn't mentioned anywhere, and I felt disappointed,' she recalled.

Her producer, however, assured her that the title would define her career. 'He told me this name would stay with me forever and that I would be introduced to the film industry as the Dream Girl,' she said. True to his word, the nickname gained currency with every film she delivered, eventually inspiring the makers — including her mother, who produced the 1977 film — to formally title one of her projects 'Dream Girl'.
