Mumbai, Sep 14 (NationPress) Dream Girl Hema Malini embarked on her Bollywood journey opposite Raj Kapoor in the 1968 film, "Sapno Ka Saudagar". But are you aware of the intriguing circumstances that led to her casting?
During her guest appearance on the renowned talk show "Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai", hosted by Farooq Shaikh, she shared that upon arriving in Madras from Delhi, they were quite unfamiliar with the local scene.
It was during this time that they encountered director K Subramanyan. Hema's mother approached him, expressing her desire for Hema to be introduced to the audience there. He kindly organized a showcase for her.
According to director Subrahmanyam's daughter, Padma, after finishing the shooting of "Sangam", Raj Kapoor was on the lookout for fresh talent from the South and requested Subramanyan to suggest someone. He then introduced Hema to the legendary filmmaker. However, rumors circulated that Hema lacked acting abilities.
Subramanyan, placing his faith in Hema, boldly stated to Raj Kapoor, "If this girl does not fit the headlines, right from the beginning, I will remove the word director from my name." This audacious declaration even made its way into the press.
Meanwhile, Hema recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of her iconic film "Sholay".
In a discussion with IANS, she expressed her eagerness to show this classic to her grandchildren.
When asked, "We are discussing Sholay even after fifty years. Your grandchildren, have they seen it?"
Hema responded: "I don't think they have, but now that it has reached the fifty-year mark, I will definitely show it to them. I will arrange a mini-theater experience at my home for them."
She also shared her initial disappointment regarding her role in "Sholay", feeling it was minor compared to her previous notable performances in films like 'Sita and Geeta'.
"When 'Sholay' was offered to me, after working on 'Seeta Aur Geeta', director Ramesh Sippy told me, 'There are so many characters, and you are just one among them.' This made me feel a bit disheartened, wondering, 'Why such a small role for me? Why not something bigger?'" Hema recounted.
Later, director Ramesh Sippy reassured her that her role would resonate deeply with the audience, urging her to accept it.
