Huma Qureshi on 'Ishq Kameena' remake: 'We weren't trying to imitate the original'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Huma Qureshi has opened up about the newly unveiled recreation of 'Ishq Kameena' for the upcoming film Baby Do Die Do, saying the team was focused on bringing their own identity to the track rather than replicating what Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made iconic in 2002. The revamped version features Huma alongside actor Rachit Singh and has been choreographed by filmmaker and choreographer Remo D'Souza.
The Weight of Recreating a Cult Classic
The original 'Ishq Kameena', from the film Shakti: The Power released in 2002, was sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik and remains one of Bollywood's most recognisable tracks. Huma acknowledged the enormous responsibility that came with touching it. “Ishq Kameena is massive — almost everyone has danced to it at some point, and that comes with a huge responsibility,” she said.
“We were nervous, genuinely nervous. But we weren't trying to imitate the original. We wanted to bring our own flavour while celebrating everything that made it iconic. And having Remo sir come on board to choreograph this for us, that just made it something else. I really hope people enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it,” Huma added.
Rachit Singh's Milestone Moment
For Rachit Singh, the recreation carries personal significance — it marks his first commercial promotional Hindi song. “Every day I have to pinch myself that this is happening. Big shoes to fill in, fingers crossed. But I'm so happy I got to do this with Huma. The energy between us just felt natural, it never felt like work. I think that comes through on screen,” he said.
The song is designed to showcase the crackling chemistry between the two leads, blending glamour, attitude, and high-energy dance sequences.
Remo D'Souza on Striking the Right Balance
Choreographer and filmmaker Remo D'Souza revealed that producer Saqib Saleem — who is also Huma Qureshi's brother — personally approached him with the brief to recreate the track while preserving its original spirit. “When you recreate a cult song, the biggest challenge is finding the right balance between nostalgia and freshness. We wanted this version to feel contemporary without losing the spirit that made the original so memorable. Huma brought tremendous energy to the floor, and together we created something I believe audiences will have a great time watching,” Remo said.
What the Producer Said
Producer Saqib Saleem described the recreation as a strategic move to broaden the film's reach without alienating its core audience. “The idea behind recreating Ishq Kameena was to make Baby Do Die Do reach a wider audience while still retaining the core audience the film is made for. I'm really happy with how the video merges both those worlds,” he said.
Saleem also credited music partners Tips and composer Kumar for enabling the project on an independent production scale. Baby Do Die Do is directed by Nachiket Samant and produced under a Saleem siblings' production in association with Pune 04 Film. The film also stars Sikandar Kher, Chunky Panday, Marudha Shekhawat, Vidya Malvade, Arun Kushwah, and Himanshu Malik.
Release Date
Baby Do Die Do is set to arrive in cinemas on 3 July. With the 'Ishq Kameena' recreation now out, the makers are banking on nostalgia-driven buzz to drive audiences to theatres.
