Chennai, Nov 26 (NationPress) The creative team behind director Mithun Balaji's upcoming Tamil psychological thriller ‘Stephen’, starring Gomathi Shankar and Smruthi Venkat in leading roles, has revealed that the inspiration for this highly anticipated film stemmed from a previous short film they produced.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, both director Mithun Balaji and actor Gomathi Shankar—who also co-authored the film's screenplay—shared that their award-winning short film, centered on the character of Stephen, fueled their desire to develop this project further. This film is set to debut on the OTT platform Netflix on December 5.
“Back in 2020, we created a short film, which we co-wrote, focusing on Stephen. It received an overwhelming response at various short film festivals. The narrative revolved around this character, and the audience truly resonated with it. We initially underestimated the public's interest in serial killers, opting for a unique take,” Gomathi Shankar elaborated.
What made it unique? “There was no violence in that short film. Lasting about 10 minutes, it featured a conversation between a serial killer and a psychiatrist. Viewers found it captivating. We secured several awards, including best actor, best director, and best film, which left us pleasantly surprised and excited. This motivated us to consider creating a sequel,” he added.
“As we co-authored the script, it expanded to a runtime of 40 minutes. We shared it with our team of aspiring directors and writers who were enthusiastic about it. One team member proposed transforming it into a feature film. We initially thought of adding just 15 more minutes, but that process took years. After a year and a half of writing, we finally completed a feature film,” he explained.
The film, produced by Jayakumar and Mohan, also stars Michael Thangadurai in a significant role. The much-anticipated thriller is scheduled for release on Netflix on December 5.
In a landscape where reality often surpasses fiction, the creators assert that ‘Stephen’ will challenge perceptions of guilt and innocence.
‘Stephen’ promises to be a gripping, character-driven thriller that delves into themes of guilt, morality, and the ambiguous boundaries of right and wrong.
