Veteran actress Kalpana Iyer has shared a touching backstage memory from the sets of the 1996 Bollywood blockbuster 'Raja Hindustani', recalling a young Kareena Kapoor who would visit her sister Karisma Kapoor during the shoot — and how Iyer instantly sensed the girl's star potential.

The Memory That Stayed

In a recent Instagram post featuring throwback photographs from the iconic song 'Pardesi Pardesi', Kalpana Iyer wrote at length about the dances that have left a permanent mark on her. She described 'Pardesi Pardesi' as the one number that stands above all others in her career — a product of, as she put it, 'A director with a Vision and A Cameraman who was a Master in his Craft.' The sequence was reportedly shot over two weeks at night, demanding what she called 'Total Submission from Every Single Person on The Sets.'

Kareena Kapoor: The Young Visitor

It is the closing lines of Iyer's post, however, that have resonated most widely. She recalled a 'Sweet Young Girl' who would come to the set to spend time with her sister. 'I would keep Staring at Her and keep Telling my Hair Dresser She is So Beautiful and She Will Become a Star Soon,' Iyer wrote, adding, 'and She did and Sooner Than I Thought.' That young girl, she confirmed, was Kareena Kapoor — who at the time was years away from her own Bollywood debut. Iyer called these 'Precious Memories.'

The Film Behind the Story

'Raja Hindustani', directed by Dharmesh Darshan, starred Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles and became one of the biggest commercial successes of 1996. The film followed a small-town cab driver who falls in love with a wealthy young woman. Iyer also credited costume designer Manish Malhotra for the iconic look she carried through the shoot, including a tattoo-style bindi she drew on her forehead every single day for two weeks.

A Career Measured in Dance

Iyer noted that she has performed in approximately 80 to 100 dance numbers across Hindi and other language films. She was candid about the nature of that work — 'it was my Calling and it was A Job and My Choice' — while emphasising that dignity, respect, and financial stability were her core requirements, all of which she said she received. Of those many performances, 'Pardesi Pardesi' from 'Raja Hindustani' remains, by her own account, unmatched.

Kalpana Iyer's recollection is more than nostalgia — it is a rare first-person account of Kareena Kapoor's pre-debut years, seen through the eyes of a working actress who was present at a pivotal moment in Hindi cinema.
