Filmmaker and television host Karan Johar has announced that Season 9 of his celebrated celebrity chat show 'Koffee With Karan' will be its last, bringing down the curtain on a 22-year run that spanned 8 seasons and 161 episodes. The final season premieres on 14 October on JioHotstar.

An Emotional Farewell Rooted in Memory

Johar broke the news through an Instagram video that was equal parts announcement and personal tribute. In the video, he recalled a conversation with his late father, veteran producer Yash Johar, that planted the seed for the show. 'It was June 2004 when I told my dad, ‘I really want to host a talk show. I want to get two celebrities or stars and just have an informal, candid chat with them,’' Karan said in the video.

Yash Johar's response, as recounted by his son, was characteristically blunt: 'Karan, you’re going to call your friends, chat with them. You do that every day. Who is going to pay to do that?' His father passed away on 26 June 2004, the very month of that conversation. The show's first episode was shot on 16 August 2004 — just weeks later.

What Karan Johar Said About Ending the Show

Johar described the decision to conclude the show as instinctive rather than strategic. 'There are some journeys you don’t plan to end, you simply know, somewhere deep within you, when it is time to let them go,' he said. He credited the show's longevity to its audience, noting that viewers had 'laughed with us, debated us, trolled us, celebrated us and, most importantly, kept coming back for another cup.'

Signing off, Johar framed the final season as a collective farewell: 'This final season is my way of raising the mug one last time with gratitude, with love and with everyone who has made Koffee With Karan what it is.'

JioHotstar Marks the Legacy

Alok Jain, Head of Hindi and English Entertainment Business at JioStar, described the show as a rare pop-culture phenomenon. 'Koffee With Karan is the talk show that brought the biggest celebrities into viewers’ living rooms and built a fandom that very few shows have matched,' Jain said.
