Mumbai, March 14 (NationPress) Kaveri Kapur, the daughter of Shekhar Kapur, recently shared her most adventurous Holi experience, her culinary favorites, and the rituals she follows to gear up for the vibrant celebrations.
From playful childhood memories to treasured family occasions, Kaveri reflects on how Holi has influenced her life every year.
When discussing the most outrageous thing she’s done on Holi, Kaveri reminisced about a memorable childhood adventure. She revealed to IANS, “I’ve always been a bit of a Holi rebel. My best friend and I once orchestrated a grand scheme, convincing everyone we were 'allergic' to colors! We even hid behind our building during the festivities, leading to a full-scale search party. In hindsight, my relationship with Holi has always been... intricate! But when I do participate, it’s always with my childhood friends—they’re the only ones I trust with my color aversion!”
Kaveri is unabashed about her love for food.
“Sushi! I’m completely captivated by it—the ideal mix of artistry and taste. I’m even pondering if there’s a way to create Holi-themed sushi rolls? Rainbow-colored rice paired with wasabi gulal? Maybe I’ve just created something unique! But in all seriousness, exceptional sushi is my weakness, festive or not. I could enjoy it every single day without losing interest,” she expressed.
Regarding her cooking skills during Holi, Kaveri remains modest. “I wish I could claim to have perfected a secret family gujiya or thandai recipe, but my Holi cooking skills are nonexistent!” she admits with a grin. Despite not being a culinary warrior, Kaveri excels at appreciating the cooking of others. “I’m great at acknowledging other people's Holi culinary efforts. Perhaps this year I’ll finally attempt to make something... or more realistically, I’ll be the official taste-tester!”
Kaveri’s pre-Holi routine is amusing yet highly effective.
She disclosed, “I essentially become an oil slick! I start with a generous application of coconut oil in my hair and almond oil on my skin—it’s my beauty trick for easier color removal while keeping my skin hydrated.” She meticulously oils every inch before the festivities kick off, ensuring her hair and skin are ready for the fun. “Another unchangeable Holi ritual is always wearing white. There’s something creatively satisfying about seeing my white outfit serve as a canvas when colors are splashed on! That’s half the excitement of this festival!”
Reflecting on her memories of Holika Dahan, Kaveri shared, “Some of my most treasured childhood experiences are from Holika Dahan nights! We would gather around the bonfire while the elders narrated the tale of Prahlad and the victory of good over evil. There’s something so enchanting about observing the flames flicker against the night sky. We’d circle the fire, offer prayers, and then share prasad together. Although I’ve missed a few when living abroad, every time I’m in India, attending Holika Dahan and celebrating Holi the following day are non-negotiable events.”
