Mumbai, June 20 (NationPress) After more than thirty years of captivating audiences, director Muzaffar Ali's historical musical drama “Umrao Jaan” is set to make a comeback to theaters on June 27 this year.
Featuring Rekha in the lead role, Farooq Shaikh portrayed Nawab Sultan in this acclaimed drama.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Muzaffar Ali recounted the story behind casting the late Farooq Shaikh in his film.
He remarked, "He was with us during ‘Gaman’. At that time, I couldn't envision the project without him. His face was ideal for any role, coupled with exceptional talent. Unlike many, he possessed a unique softness that made him the perfect protagonist."
Ali emphasized that the timeless classic still resonates with viewers due to its profound portrayal of womanhood, culture, and elegance.
He disclosed, “There exists a remarkable continuity in maintaining the essence of my Umrao Jaan. Nearly three generations have cherished this as a treasured legacy of their emotional growth. It promises to be a dual experience—witnessing their grandparents’ sensibility alongside their own discoveries. It is a film that transcends time.”
On why the film remains relevant to cinephiles, he added, “It embodies passion, rootedness, and meticulous attention to detail. It represents not only a cultural identity but also the identity of womanhood. Rekha’s enduring performance is unparalleled, showcasing one of the finest roles an actress has ever portrayed, allowing audiences to live through her character.”
Inspired by Mirza Hadi Ruswa's 1899 Urdu novel “Umrao Jaan Ada”, the film narrates the poignant journey of a Lucknow tawaif and poet, chronicling her unfulfilled quest for true love.
Originally released on January 2, 1981, this project garnered significant critical acclaim upon its release.
