Regarding the re-release of “Umrao Jaan”, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali revealed on June 2 that the film has been restored in 4K resolution. The immersive revival on the big screen commenced on June 27.
Ali also unveiled a limited-edition coffee table book that provides an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of ‘Umrao Jaan’. This book includes never-before-seen photographs, costume sketches, poetry, and personal stories from the set, making it a collector’s treasure and a heartfelt homage to the film’s artistic impact.
Ali expressed that ‘Umrao Jaan’ transcended mere filmmaking; it represented a journey into the essence of a lost culture and a forgotten tehzeeb.
“I had actors who brought weight to their roles, but then there was Rekha, who embodied Umrao Jaan and truly made it immortal. I am excited that this film returns to the big screen for a new generation to explore a time and culture that is integral to our identity,” he stated.
Released in 1981, “Umrao Jaan” is a period musical drama based on the 1899 Urdu novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. The film narrates the tale of a Lucknow tawaif and poet, chronicling her rise to fame. Recognized as one of the finest Indian films ever, Umrao Jaan received multiple accolades, including four awards at the 29th National Film Awards, notably Best Actress.
