Operation Safed Sagar, a military drama series starring Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Dia Mirza, and Adil Hussain, is set to premiere globally on Netflix on 7 August. Inspired by one of the Indian Air Force's most demanding wartime missions, the series draws from the real events of Operation Safed Sagar — the IAF's air campaign during the 1999 Kargil War.

What the Series Is About

Directed by Oni Sen, the show centres on the Golden Arrows Squadron, a unit that operated under extreme conditions during the Kargil conflict. Rather than focusing solely on aerial combat, the narrative traces the personal stories of the pilots, their families, and the human cost of duty — exploring friendship, sacrifice, leadership, and split-second decision-making at the edge of survival.

The series was created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, with Srivastava's firsthand experience in the Indian Air Force informing much of the research behind the script. Production spanned more than 100 locations, including shoots at altitudes exceeding 16,000 feet, and involved an extensive visual effects pipeline to reconstruct the aerial theatre of war.

The Cast and Creative Team

Beyond the lead quartet, the ensemble includes Abhay Verma, Prajakta Koli, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin, and Amrita Bagchi. The series is produced by Matchbox Shots LLP and Feel Good Films.

Sanjay Routray of Matchbox Shots said the story 'demands more than remembrance — it deserves to be brought to life with honesty and scale,' adding that 'the greatest acts of heroism are often driven by duty, sacrifice, and humanity.' Parmar noted that the production 'always sought to balance scale with intimate human drama.'

Netflix India's Take

Tanya Bami, Series Head at Netflix India, described the project as 'a first-of-its-kind series inspired by the IAF's role in the Kargil War,' calling it a tribute to the Golden Arrows squadron that 'went beyond the call of duty.' Bami added that the series aims to take audiences 'into the world of air force pilots — their lives, their bravery, and the split-second decision-making that goes into keeping our borders safe.'

Why It Stands Out

War dramas set during Kargil have appeared in Hindi cinema before — most notably LOC Kargil (2003) and Shershaah (2021) — but a long-form series dedicated specifically to the IAF's air operations during the conflict marks new territory for Indian streaming content. The Golden Arrows Squadron's role has received relatively limited mainstream coverage compared to the ground battles, making the series an attempt to fill a documented gap in popular military storytelling.

With Operation Safed Sagar premiering on 7 August 2025, audiences and critics alike will assess whether the production's scale translates into the kind of immersive, character-driven war drama that Indian streaming has yet to fully deliver.
