New Delhi, Aug 4 (NationPress) The finest shooters from India have gathered at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range as the training camp for the 16th Asian Shooting Championships (ASC) commenced on Monday.
The upcoming championships are set to take place from August 16 to 30 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, where India is poised to send its largest team of 182 shooters competing in events across pistol, rifle, and shotgun, covering both Olympic and Non-Olympic categories. This event will showcase a fierce contest for continental supremacy among leading Asian shooting nations ahead of the much-anticipated Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The preparatory camp follows a national training session held last month in Dehradun for rifle and pistol athletes and in Bhopal for shotgun competitors, as announced by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) in a statement.
Of the 182 athletes, 35 seniors and 36 juniors will have their travel expenses covered by the government, while the remainder will be responsible for their own travel, adhering to entry guidelines. So far, a total of 734 athletes from 28 nations have registered for this edition of the ASC. The host nation, Kazakhstan, is expected to field over 100 athletes, with South Korea and China sending 70 and 47 athletes, respectively.
The first group of Indian participants, including pistol and skeet shooters, will depart for Kazakhstan on August 14, while the rifle competitors will leave on August 17. The rest of the team will be on their way by August 20, and those competing in non-Olympic events are scheduled to travel on August 24.
At the previous edition of the Asian Shooting Championships in 2023, held in Changwon, South Korea, India secured the third position in the medal standings, behind China and South Korea, amassing a total of 19 medals, which included six gold, eight silver, and five bronze medals.
