Mumbai, Aug 7 (NationPress) Actress Radhika Apte revealed that during her early pregnancy, while continuing to meet her professional obligations, she encountered significant insensitivity within the Indian film industry.
During a live session of Neha Dhupia's Freedom to Feed, Radhika discussed the emotional and physical struggles she endured after announcing her pregnancy, highlighting the ongoing biases against motherhood.
“An Indian producer I was collaborating with was displeased upon hearing the news,” she recounted.
She elaborated: “He reacted coldly, even insisting that I wear tight-fitting clothing despite my discomfort and bloating. In my first trimester, I had constant cravings and was consuming a lot of food, from rice to pasta, and experiencing typical physical changes. Yet, instead of empathy, I was met with insensitivity.”
Radhika further stated that she “wasn’t even permitted to see a doctor” when she felt “pain and unease on set. That was truly disheartening.”
In stark contrast, Radhika shared a positive experience from an international project she was involved in around the same time.
“The Hollywood director I worked with was incredibly supportive. When I mentioned my increased appetite and the possibility of looking different by the end of the shoot, he laughed and said, ‘Don’t worry, even if you’re a different person by the end of this project, it’s perfectly fine. Because you're pregnant!’ That kind of reassurance and warmth was invaluable to me.”
She acknowledged the necessity of upholding professional commitments, which she has always respected.
“However, a bit of empathy can make a significant difference. I wasn’t seeking special treatment, just kindness and basic humanity after sharing such a personal and joyous announcement.”
Radhika met Benedict Taylor in London in 2011 during her year-long sabbatical, where she was studying contemporary dance. They had a registered marriage one month before the official ceremony, which took place in March 2013. In October 2024, it was revealed that she was expecting their first child.
