Kochi, Sep 9 (NationPress) Malayalam rapper Hiran Das Murali, widely recognized as Vedan, appeared before the local police on Tuesday for questioning regarding a case in which he was granted anticipatory bail by the Kerala High Court last month. This case involves allegations of rape based on a purported false promise of marriage.
"I cannot discuss anything with the media due to court directives. After I finish here, we can talk," Vedan stated to reporters as he approached the police station.
On August 27, the High Court provided him with conditional bail, mandating his presence before the investigative team for two days starting Tuesday.
If the police decide to apprehend him post-questioning, he will be eligible for bail.
The case was initiated by a doctor who claims that Vedan developed a friendship with her via Instagram in 2021, which evolved into a relationship over time.
She alleges that he guaranteed marriage and, under that pretense, they engaged in physical relations multiple times in Kozhikode, Kochi, and other locations from 2021 to 2023.
The complaint also indicates that they cohabitated briefly and she aided him financially, including contributions toward his debut album and travel costs.
Represented by legal counsel, the complainant contested the bail application, asserting that Vedan had similarly misled other young women.
However, the court emphasized that each case should be evaluated independently.
Vedan's attorney argued that their relationship was consensual, initiated by the complainant's approach as a fan, and that the complaint arose from personal disputes.
Previously, the police issued a lookout notice for Vedan, concerned that he might flee the country since he had been evading authorities since the case emerged.
Interestingly, following the registration of this case, similar allegations surfaced from other women. Nonetheless, the court clarified that those additional accusations were not considered in the current bail petition.
