Shashi Kapoor was the youngest son of the esteemed Prithviraj Kapoor, the founder of the Kapoor dynasty in Hindi cinema. He began his acting journey as a child actor in 1948, appearing in his brother Raj Kapoor’s first directorial venture ‘Aag’, and transitioned to adult roles in 1961 with Yash Chopra’s political drama ‘Dharmputra’.
His breakthrough came in 1965 with major hits like ‘Waqt’ and ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’. After a mixed phase in his career, he made a significant comeback in 1974, becoming one of the top stars of his era, featuring in iconic films from the early 1970s to the 1980s, including ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan’, ‘Deewaar’, ‘Chori Mera Kaam’, ‘Kabhi Kabhie’, ‘Fakira’, ‘Trishul’, ‘Kranti’, and ‘Namak Halaal’.
He garnered critical praise for roles such as a reckless chieftain in ‘Junoon’, a businessman in ‘Kalyug’, a strict father in ‘Vijeta’, and a principled journalist in ‘New Delhi Times’, for which he received the National Film Award for Best Actor. Over his career, he earned four National Film Awards and appeared in several international films.
In recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 2011 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2014.
