Sachin Pilgaonkar recalls Shriya's script demand before debut film Ekulti Ek
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Veteran actor-filmmaker Sachin Pilgaonkar has shared a candid memory from the moment he first offered his daughter, actor Shriya Pilgaonkar, her big-screen debut — only to be met with a response he did not see coming. Rather than jumping at the opportunity, Shriya asked him to hand over the script so she could read it before deciding. The revelation emerged during a special episode of the Marathi quiz reality show Kon Honar Crorepati, hosted by actor Madhuri Dixit, where Sachin and actor Madhurani Gokhale appeared to promote their upcoming film Kaapus Kondyachi Gosht.
The Play That Changed Everything
Sachin recalled that the idea of casting Shriya came to him only after he watched her perform in a short stage play. She had personally invited him and her mother, actor Supriya Pilgaonkar, to attend the show — a production that ran for just ten minutes. Her presence in the very first scene convinced Sachin that she had genuine acting ability.
'The first time I saw her perform, she was in a play that was just ten minutes long. She had invited Supriya and me to watch it, and in her very first scene, I knew there was something in her. On the way home, I told her, 'Shriya, I feel like making a film, and I would like you to act in it.' That thought came to me only after watching her work. Before that, it had never occurred to me,' Sachin said on the show.
A Daughter Who Demanded the Script
What surprised Sachin was Shriya's matter-of-fact response. Instead of accepting her father's offer outright, she asked to review the material first. Sachin admitted he was momentarily struck silent.
'She immediately said, 'Give me a script. I'll read it and let you know.' I fell silent. I thought, 'She is my daughter, after all.' She read the script, liked it and did the film. She won several awards for her very first film. After that, she made her own path. She earned her own place,' he added.
The film in question was Ekulti Ek, a Marathi drama released in 2013, which Sachin wrote, directed, and produced. The father-daughter story served as Shriya's debut as a lead actor on the big screen, and she went on to win multiple awards for the role.
Shriya Pilgaonkar's Independent Career
Although she was born into a household with two celebrated actors, Shriya has steadily carved out a space of her own across film and digital platforms. She made her Hindi film debut in Maneesh Sharma's Fan (2016), opposite Shah Rukh Khan, where she played Neha, a friend of Khan's protagonist Gaurav.
Her subsequent film appearances include House Arrest, Bhangra Paa Le, Haathi Mere Saathi, Kaadan, Ishq-e-Nadaan, and Dry Day. On streaming platforms, she has featured in critically noticed series such as Mirzapur, The Gone Game, Crackdown, Guilty Minds, The Broken News, and Taaza Khabar. More recently, she appeared in Mandala Murders and Chhal Kapat: The Deception.
Context and What This Reflects
Shriya's insistence on reading the script before accepting speaks to a professional approach that is relatively uncommon when a parent with filmmaking clout makes an offer. Notably, this episode offers a rare window into how the Pilgaonkar family — one of Marathi entertainment's most prominent — navigated the line between personal trust and professional rigour. For Sachin, what initially felt like a jolt from his daughter turned out to be the right instinct: the film and its lead actor both received considerable recognition.
