Saira Banu Reflects on the Enduring Friendship of Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar for the Centenary Celebration of the 'Aawara' Icon

Mumbai, Dec 14 (NationPress) Esteemed actress Saira Banu is honoring the iconic figure of Indian cinema, Raj Kapoor, as we celebrate his centenary. On Saturday, she took to her Instagram to share a heartfelt video that revisits her cherished memories of Raj Kapoor's camaraderie with her husband, Dilip Kumar.

The video showcases the two legends enjoying light-hearted moments, engaging in cricket, and displaying their playful antics.

In her caption, the actress penned a touching note, reflecting, “Raj Kapoor, the showman, the dreamer, the eternal storyteller, was once a young boy wandering through the bustling yet serene streets of Peshawar. It is no coincidence that two of the greatest icons, Sahib and Raj Ji, both originated from Peshawar.”

She further elaborated that while many within the industry and their admirers viewed them as professional competitors, they were, in fact, childhood friends from the very land of Peshawar.

She added, “They shared more than just their city; their friendship was so profound that it transcended decades, fame, and even the barriers of life itself. Their bond was forged in the streets of their hometown, strengthened amidst the hustle of Mumbai, and immortalized on the grand stage of life. Beyond the glitz and glamour, they were simply two men who cherished each other’s company. Their mutual love for cricket united them as boys at heart, laughing and cheering together under the sun. Their compassion brought them together as they collaborated for causes larger than themselves, raising funds and inspiring hope during challenging times.”

She reminisced, “Raj Ji, with his playful humor, often teased Sahib, playfully asking, ‘Why don’t you get married, my friend?’ with a grin. ‘The day you marry, I will crawl on my knees to you.’ And when that day arrived, as Sahib wed me, Raj Ji, true to his word, knelt before him, laughing, ‘See, I told you! Thank you for finally allowing me to do this.’”

Saira Banu recounted a poignant moment when Raj Kapoor was hospitalized following a cardiac arrest. Dilip Kumar, who was abroad, hurried back upon receiving the news.

“Standing beside his motionless friend, he whispered through his tears, ‘Raj, wake up! I’ve brought the aroma of Chapli Kebabs. Let’s stroll through the bazaar like we used to, eating kebabs, laughing, and reminiscing. Please, no acting now; take me back to Peshawar.’ His voice trembled, his heart shattered, and in that silent room, the depth of their love resonated more powerfully than words ever could,” she concluded.
