Guwahati, October 8 (NationPress) Sandipan Garg, the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Assam and cousin of Zubeen Garg, has been placed in police custody for seven days following his arrest on Wednesday linked to the singer's tragic death.
Sandipan Garg attended the yacht party in Singapore on September 19, where the beloved music icon drowned while swimming.
Zubeen Garg had traveled to Singapore for the Northeast India Music Festival, accompanied by Sandipan to enjoy the event.
For the past week, Sandipan Garg faced extensive questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating Zubeen Garg's death.
After his appearance before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup district, the court ordered him into seven days of police custody.
The SIT, led by CID Special DGP M. P. Gupta, stated, "We requested 14 days of custody; however, the court granted only seven days. The investigation is ongoing, and I cannot disclose more details regarding Garg’s arrest."
Gupta added that Rup Kamal Kalita, an Assamese individual based in Singapore, was questioned for the second consecutive day, and the CID is preparing to issue new summons to other NRIs present at the yacht on September 19.
He remarked, "Rup Kamal Kalita appeared today; we will send new summons to the other individuals who attended the yacht party with Zubeen Garg. The legal process for questioning these NRIs depends on the mutual agreement treaty between the Indian and Singapore governments."
Meanwhile, Sandipan Garg took to social media, claiming he had “fully cooperated” with the SIT during an extensive interrogation.
This arrest signifies a significant turn in the high-profile case that has captivated the public and cultural circles of Assam.
The SIT, formed under the directive of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure a transparent and timely investigation, has already apprehended four individuals prior to Sandipan Garg's detention.
On October 1, the team arrested Zubeen's manager Siddharth Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta for their roles in coordinating the music festival in Singapore where the singer was scheduled to perform.
Both individuals face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Additionally, two of Zubeen's bandmates, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta, have also been taken into custody and remanded for 14 days for further questioning.
