Los Angeles, April 22 (NationPress) Renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese has expressed heartfelt condolences as he commemorated the late Pope Francis.
The Pope died at the age of 88. The acclaimed director frequently visited the Vatican and had met with the Pope multiple times during his career, establishing a connection through their shared passion for art, according to Variety.
“There is so much that can be articulated about the impact of Pope Francis and all that he represented to the world, to the church, and to the papacy. I will allow others to elaborate on that,” Scorsese remarked.
He mentioned to Variety, “He was, in every respect, an extraordinary individual. He recognized his own shortcomings. He exuded wisdom and goodness. He possessed an unwavering dedication to righteousness. He understood that ignorance was a dire affliction for humanity. Thus, he continually sought knowledge and enlightenment. He embraced, advocated for, and practiced forgiveness—universal and enduring forgiveness.”
The legendary director added, “The void left by his passing is profound; I had the fortune of knowing him, and I will deeply miss his presence and warmth. The world has suffered an immense loss. However, he left behind a light that can never be dimmed.”
As reported by Variety, in May 2023, Scorsese met with Pope Francis and announced plans for another film focusing on Jesus, having previously depicted the biblical character in 1988’s The Last Temptation of Christ featuring Willem Dafoe and 2016’s Silence starring Andrew Garfield.
“I responded to the Pope’s call to artists in the only manner I know: by imagining and scripting a film about Jesus,” Scorsese stated at that time. “And I'm about to commence production.”
While the development status of the movie remains uncertain, it was disclosed last year that the film would adapt Shusaku Endo’s novel A Life of Jesus, with Scorsese collaborating on the screenplay with his longstanding partner Kent Jones.
Scorsese is among a multitude of celebrities paying tribute to Pope Francis following his passing, sharing this moment with Whoopi Goldberg, Russell Crowe, Antonio Banderas, Jimmy Fallon, Sylvester Stallone, and others.
