Neila Devi, wife of legendary Hindi cinema star Shammi Kapoor, has shared a charming and little-known story about the birthday in 1968 when Shammi failed to show up — an absence he reportedly spent the rest of his life making up for. The anecdote, shared during a candid conversation with her nephew and actor Jatin Sial, grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, offers a rare personal glimpse into one of Bollywood's most beloved love stories.

The Birthday He Missed

Neila recalled that her brother had organised a birthday party for her and asked whom she wished to invite. Her answer was immediate: Shammi Kapoor. At the time, she had never met him personally — she was simply a devoted fan since childhood.

'You will be surprised, there was this birthday where he didn't come only. That's the best part,' she said. Her brother reached out to Shammi, who explained that he had just returned from Calcutta after attending the premiere of his film 'Brahmachari' and had come back unwell. He declined the invitation but made a promise.

'I will make up for it, because she is my fan, so whatever I can do for her, I will do,' Shammi reportedly told her brother. Neila added with a laugh: 'And after that, he had to make up for it all his life.'

From Fan to Wife in Four Months

What makes the story even more remarkable is the speed with which events unfolded. By January 1969 — just four months after that missed birthday — Neila had married the very man who had stood her up. Shammi Kapoor and Neila Devi tied the knot on 27 January 1969 at Shammi's residence in Mumbai, in an intimate ceremony attended by family and close friends.

Shammi's Life Before Neila

Before his marriage to Neila, Shammi had been wed to actress Geeta Bali. The two fell in love on set and married in 1955, going on to have two children — Aditya Raj Kapoor and Kanchan. Their marriage was tragically cut short when Geeta Bali passed away in January 1965 at the age of 34 after contracting smallpox.

According to reports from that period, Geeta's death left Shammi devastated. He was mid-shoot on 'Teesri Manzil' at the time and reportedly withdrew from the production, slipping into depression. When he eventually returned to work, the first song he filmed was 'Tumne Mujhe Dekha' — and observers noted that the visible grief on his face became an integral part of the sequence's emotional power.

Notably, Neila had actually known Shammi since her own childhood, making their eventual union a story that had been quietly years in the making.
