Fauja Singh met with a tragic accident near his home village in Punjab, where he was struck by a speeding vehicle driven by Dhillon. He sustained severe head injuries and ultimately succumbed to them.
On July 16, the Punjab Police apprehended the alleged perpetrator of the hit-and-run that resulted in the death of marathon legend Fauja Singh on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway.
The suspect, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a 26-year-old non-resident Indian from Kartarpur in Jalandhar, was arrested two days post-incident.
Dhillon, who relocated to Canada with his family, had only returned to India a week prior to the accident.
Authorities confirmed that Dhillon was operating a Toyota Fortuner (registration number PB 20 C 7100) during the incident. The vehicle has since been retrieved.
Reports indicate that Dhillon admitted to the offense, claiming he was alone in the car, en route from Bhogpur to Kishangarh when the collision occurred.
