Mumbai, July 17 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced in the Assembly that future promotions for the position of Secondary Inspector (Group-A) within the State Excise Department will exclusively come from the jawan cadre.

He stated that the government is contemplating modifications to the service rules to give preference to jawans in the hiring process.

In response to a question raised in the House, Pawar explained that the current recruitment system, which consists of 25 percent direct promotions, 25 percent through departmental exams, and 50 percent via nominations, will undergo revisions. Presently, the departmental examination method fills positions in an 80:20 ratio between jawan and clerk cadres, reserving a mere 5 percent of total posts for clerks. Pawar emphasized that promotions will no longer occur from the clerk cadre.

“Secondary inspectors are tasked with criminal investigations, conducting raids, checking vehicles, and combating illicit liquor trade. Thus, physical fitness is crucial, and only jawans fulfill these criteria,” stated Pawar.

He added, “We have made the decision to exclusively promote jawans for future recruitments to this position. However, we will seek the Law and Justice Department's opinion on halting the current recruitment process. If halting is not feasible, the new policy will be implemented in the next recruitment cycle.”

In reply to a motion from MLA Rajesh Wankhede, DCM Pawar announced that a revised administrative approval has been secured for a Rs 150-crore development plan aimed at enhancing basic infrastructure in the Mozari region, coinciding with the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj birth centenary.

He emphasized the need for clarity regarding the transfer of three new buildings under this plan, including an educational complex. “A meeting with local institution heads and public representatives will occur within 15 days to determine the best management for these facilities,” Pawar stated.

The Akhil Bharatiya Shri Gurudev Seva Mandal and Shri Kshetra Gurukul Ashram have requested that various components of the development, such as the educational complex, guest house, and village development academy, be transferred to them. However, Pawar clarified that while one building’s entrance is within the Gurukunj Ashram campus, the remaining structures are on government land, and the 5.7-hectare plot has not been formally transferred to the state.

Addressing another motion from MLA Hemant Rasane, Pawar shared that the revised Pandharpur Pilgrimage Development Plan includes constructing housing for sanitation workers in the city. The project will assign 600 sq ft flats to 213 workers, at an estimated cost of Rs 55.61 crore.

The housing complex will consist of 13 buildings—12 four-storeyed and one five-storeyed—comprising 213 residential units and 24 commercial shops across seven road-facing buildings. “We will engage with local representatives and the Solapur District Collector to expedite the project. Funding will not be an issue,” he assured.
